Early Thursday morning, an armed man robbed Virginia Educators Credit Union located on Christopher Newport University’s campus according to Newport News Police. The man held a credit union employee at gun point and then fled the premises through the CNU Village parking garage located directly off of Warwick Boulevard and underneath CNU students apartments.
One eye witness, who asked to remain anonymous, was walking to class when he saw a man “hauling ass” out of the Village Parking Garage. He stated that as he was saying “Hi” to the suspect passing by, he got a red powder in his face from what the suspicious man was carrying; what the witness believes to have been a bag of money. Then he heard a CNU maintenance woman scream for help and when he rushed to her side he found a gun on the ground.
Newport News Public Information Officer Harold Eley got the call about the robbery at 8:46 A.M. When on the scene they discovered that the suspect displayed a weapon, robbed the credit union, then fled the area.
CNU police officials stated that shortly after they heard about the robbery they sent a “CNU Alert”, which students received at 8:51 A.M., to all students that stated, “Continue to shelter in an interior room. Shut windows, lock and barricade doors. This is an emergency. Do not come to campus. You will be notified of the all clear.”
The students remained on lock down on East Campus until 10:12 A.M.

Police need to look at the suspects that match the description– to include ones they released and were identified in a line up by the tellers. He will continue to rob as long as he is free and next time he might hurt someone. Go back to last May “robbing a credit union on Warwick Boulevard May 2009″ You released him and now he is continuing what he knows best.
So his gun was immediately recovered…so there was an unarmed man running around campus…
if he was confident to drop his gun with police all around, i’m positive he had an alternative weapon…
My god, first the Discovery Channel building, now the Virginia Credit Union near Christopher Newport University…! Where will they strike next!?
“hauling ass”? what exactly was he hauling the ass in…donkeys are quite large. I would imagine a man hauling a donkey would not be difficult to find.
What has CNU’s response been to the fact that 8am classes were released? I think that failure to keep students in classes safe is something CNU needs to address quickly since based on prevous comments, this isn’t the first robbery.
I sure hope this is an isolated incident.
Hah, this is the second time its been robbed in a twelve month period.
actually erik,
the robbery occurred at the virginia educators bank on nettles drive. not in the village.
that has been robbed twice.
sorry let me clarify that..
the two robberies prior to the one today took place at the bank on nettles drive. (not on campus)
