The beginning of a new school year is always crazy but brings exciting things to CNU. There is a lot going on this year, and its no different with the arts at CNU. The Ferguson Center for the Arts, TheaterCNU, the Department of Music and the Department of Fine Art & Art History will be busy from day one with lots of opportunities for students to come out and get involved.

Department of Music

The Department of Music has an exciting year planned, and students who hope to get involved with the department will have a variety of opportunities to do so, with multiple performance ensembles available for musicians and vocalists alike. Performance ensembles range from choirs and jazz ensembles to bands and orchestras, include students from nearly every department and provide opportunities for students to learn and perform a large variety of different musical styles.

For students interested in becoming a member of the Marching Captains, now is the time to prepare. Positions are available in all sections of the marching band including brass, woodwind, percussion and color guard. Students interested in becoming a Marching Captain must audition during Setting Sail. A meeting will be held at noon on the second day of Setting Sail where students can find out more information about the Marching Captains and have any questions answered. Though all the performance ensembles are credited courses, participants do not need to be music majors to audition. For more information on any of the ensembles, students may contact the directors.

As far as performances go, students can look forward to many performances throughout the year including senior recitals, ensemble and orchestral performances, and the Trible Library Chamber Music Series. In April, CNUs Department of Music and OperaCNU will work in collaboration with TheaterCNU to present Gilbert and Sullivans classic musical, H.M.S. Pinafore.

Department of Fine Art & Art History

Artists and art lovers alike will have plenty of opportunities to see a variety of beautiful art throughout the year, thanks to the Department of Fine Art & Art History. Several exhibitions are already planned for the Falk Gallery of Art and the Ferguson Hall Gallery, and more are in the works.

The year kicks off before classes even start on Aug. 17 as ArtCNU alumna Jessica Casper presents a solo exhibition entitled Legendary Livin. The exhibit will include over 50 black and white photos of rural life in the Tidewater Area and will be on display in both the Falk Gallery and the Ferguson Hall Gallery until September 28.

A variety of other solo exhibitions are scheduled to take place in the Falk Gallery over the year, including works by Japanese Ceramicist Akiko Tanaka in October, painter Steven Pearson in January, and Daniel Smith in March. The 4th Annual ArtCNU Juried Photography Exhibition is currently slotted to be on display in the Ferguson Hall Gallery in February and is open to all CNU students, faculty and staff and the 2011 Senior Thesis Exhibition will close out the year in both the Falk Gallery and Ferguson Hall Gallery in April. Other exhibits in the Falk and Ferguson Hall Galleries are still to be determined, but students can look forward to a variety of unique and interesting shows throughout the year.

TheaterCNU

As always, TheaterCNU will be spending most of their time on the main stage, but this years season is quite unique. The season begins in October with Matthew Barbers adaptation of Elizabeth von Armins novel, Enchanted April. Directed by TheaterCNU Professor Denise Gillman; the lead roles for Enchanted April have already been cast and students are hard at work, but general auditions for ensemble roles will be held in the fall. Fall general auditions will also include casting opportunities for TheaterCNUs second show of the year, Alan Ayckbourns Comic Potential, set to open in November. The fall semester will round out with the annual one-act play festival in December, with titles and student directors still to be determined.

Students will come back in the spring and prepare to delve into the world of ancient Greece as TheaterCNU presents Greek Tragedy, a Workshop production, in association with the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures in February. For the dancers at CNU, your turn comes in March, as TheaterCNU will present its second annual dance concert. Rounding out the 2010-2011 season will be another collaborative effort as TheaterCNU works with the Department of Music and OperaCNU to present Gilbert and Sullivans classic, H.M.S. Pinafore in April.

If youre not a theater major or minor, you can still be part of TheaterCNU productions. General auditions will take place on August 25 starting at 5 p.m., with sign-ups available outside the Ferguson Center rehearsal hall. Students should prepare a 90- to 120-second monologue from either a published comedic or dramatic play and are encouraged to read Enchanted April and Comic Potential prior to auditions.

Students interested in learning more about TheaterCNU are invited to their annual meeting on August 24 at 5 p.m. in the Ferguson Center rehearsal hall.

Ferguson Center for the Arts

Its no surprise that the Ferguson Center has a great year planned and the variety of different acts is sure to provide entertainment for practically everyone. Beatles fans can rejoice, especially if you missed the show last year, as The Fab Faux returns in October. Lovers of Christmas music have a variety of shows to choose from starting in November with Handels Messiah Rocks. The options continue through December with the Oak Ridge Boys, The Lettermen, Mannheim Steam Roller and David Koz & Friends.

The Blue Man Group kicks off the spring semester with five performances in January and February is sure to delight with performances like Drumline Live and Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. March is the month for dance lovers with performances by Tango Buenos Aires, as well as the Russian National Ballets productions of Sleeping Beauty and Romeo & Juliet. Return to your childhood as The Wizard of Oz rounds out the month of March and enjoy the hilarity of Monty Python in musical form as Spamalot finishes off the season in May.

Discount tickets are available for all students with a valid CNU ID, and rush tickets are often available the week of the performance.
