Games to watch out for this season

Football vs. Wesley September 4 at 1 p.m.: At the beginning of the football teams 2009 season, the players came in with high expectations after going undefeated in USA South Conference play. However, the Captains took on a tough challenge to open the season, visiting the then-third-ranked Wesley College on the road, and losing in a shutout 34-0. The team never fully recovered, and finished with a 5-5 record.

This fall, the Captains will open their season at home with a point to prove against Wesley. The team is not shying away from the challenge of playing the fourth ranked team in the nation, which Senior linebacker Adrin Diggs believes will set the tone for the season, and could also determine how well it goes.

Everyone on this team remembers what happened last year in our disappointing season stemming from the first game, and this is a game where we really want to show fans that CNU football is back, Diggs said.

Mens Soccer vs. Salisbury on October 10 at 7 p.m.: The contest against the Salisbury Seagulls is considered to be the most important mens soccer regular season game.

Junior forward Winston Mattheisen said, We want to beat them because they beat us when we were ranked number one in the country last season, and they knocked us off. Mattheisen, who earned second team All-American honors while scoring a team leading 12 goals last season, added that students should come to all the games, as the Captains are ranked fifth in the nation in pre-season polls.

Hockey vs. Old Dominion October 10 at 11 p.m.: Captains fans will be able to show off their school spirit in the second exciting contest on the same day. Most students like hockey, and even more love the fierce rivalry between CNU and Old Dominion University. As cross-water rivals, the Monarchs are considered to be the opponent that makes the fans excited, and never disappointed.

Junior Tyler Bemis said, We were the only team to blow them out all last season. It is always a high intensity game, with a lot more physical play than in a normal game. Playing ODU is always a highlight game of our season.

The fall schedule of the hockey team will allow Captains fans to attend more games with that high intensity and excitement. The Hampton Roads IcePlex is constantly packed with hundreds of fans, on their feet, with many constantly yelling in excitement at the first sign of a collision.

CNU Volleyball Invitational October 4: The volleyball team will host a tournament, which will include four top-tiered teams, and a chance to avenge last seasons loss to the opponent that ended their season. After advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, the Captains season ended with a loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Kara Elder, who won Conference USA Souths Freshman of the Year Award last season, said, we are excited that they are coming because this is the first time that any team from the Midwest has traveled to the east coast to participate in an invitational like ours.

With a record of 36-7 in the previous season along with the NCAA tournament run, the Captains will look to continue to build on their previous seasons success, as the team lost no players due to graduation.
