On-Campus Clubs Make Worldwide Difference

We are still working out the kinks, but we are focused on helping others, said Lindsey Simmons, a rising senior at CNU and President of the TOMS club.

Based on the one for one dream of the larger organizations founder, Blake Mycoskie, students from CNU decided it was time for them to take action. Over the course of the last academic year, Simmons, along with CNUs first TOMS President Mary Heckel, helped raise awareness of the need for children in third world countries to have shoes.

I hope everyone will continue to notice our organization, Simmons said about CNUs favorable reaction to the clubs creation. A community several times the size of TOMS current group participated in their Barefoot Day, making it a huge success. Students all across campus were challenged to consider one day without shoes compared to growing up in a place where there are none.

Committed to this ideal, Simmons has huge plans to both raise awareness and get the larger organization the attention it needs so that the next time a CNU student purchases shoes, they might purchase TOMS shoes and give a pair to a child in need: one for one.

I want to focus on outreach and making TOMS a part of CNUs campus for years to come, Simmons said passionately about her role, [were] looking for members that like helping other people.

The CNU chapter of TOMS has proved that they are very willing to do whatever it takes to gain the attention they need. In the fall of 2009, TOMS was invited to nominate Mary Heckel as a Homecoming Queen nominee. In the weeks leading up to CNUs homecoming, her victory was not a surprise. Everyone knew about Heckel and her new club.

The best experience I have had from the club was probably decorating the float for homecoming, Simmons remarked, laughing as she recreates the terrifying scenario where part of the lid blew off the float. Its pretty funny now, but it wasnt so funny then.

This fun and up-and-coming club is just one of the many community-enriching clubs that CNU has to offer. Over the last few years, the global organization Students Helping Honduras (SHH) has also found incredible interest at CNU.

I think being a part of SHH has definitely enriched my campus life, said the clubs co-president Trisha Williams, a rising senior. I feel as if Im making a difference in these childrens lives no matter how small it may be.

In addition to numerous fundraising functions throughout the year, several members of SHH join active students all over the nation in flying out to Honduras to do everything from deliver clothes and school supplies, to help build school-buildings and homes for the homeless in this poverty-stricken nation.

I would just like to encourage people to look into joining SHH if they want to make a great group of friends and work on a good cause, said Williams about the future of the club.

If those two remarkable clubs arent enough, CNU hosts many other philanthropy organizations such as Circle K, STAND, and Citizens of the World. As CNU continues to grow along with its community, more students are banding together to create for themselves the experience they want and need.

On Aug. 22, CNUs Club Fair will host the leaders of the organizations and clubs that have already done their part to change the world. All they need are dedicated incoming freshmen to carry the torch into the new academic year.

We will have a booth at the club fair, said Simmons, but we cannot tell you everything we will be doing because it would ruin the surprise.
