Captains sting Hornets 1-0
Last Saturday at Captain’s Field, the Women’s Field Hockey team defeated Lynchburg University 1-0 with help from junior defender Brianna Milne, who scored a goal during a short corner in the second half.
The first half was mostly dominated by the Hornets who had their sticks down and were anticipating passes from CNU. Lynchburg came out very strong with quick passes and textbook offense.
The Captains were playing more defense than actually attacking the ball.
Junior goalie Brittany Bradsher stuck with it after having to battle off short corner after short corner, while also keeping her team motivated.
Bradsher saved 14 shots on goal by utilizing her defenders and proper goalie techniques. Most of the fluidity of the game was occurring on the right side of the field, meaning that the Captains were attacking the Hornets’ weak side, which forced them to use their reverse side stick skills.
The game lacked much scoring action, as the only goal of the game came with less than 10 minutes remaining.
On the fifth consecutive short corner for the Captains, something happened to Milne that has never happened before. She scored her first ever goal during a short corner play, and it is a good thing she did, as it would provide for the difference in the game.
“I was thinking that we needed to get it in because time was running out. I have actually never scored on an offensive corner,” said Milne on her mind set during the play.
The Captains thought they had secured the win but Lynchburg would make one last push with 20 seconds left, coming on short corner. The ball would go in, but the goal would be nullified due to obstruction in the circle. Once the clock ran down the Captains began to celebrate, along with students and parents in attendance.
One fan, junior Angela Evans, said she thought, “the girls managed to do very well today. They managed to keep the ball on the offensive side a lot, and they were able to keep good control of the ball.”
Coach Carrie Moura went into the game with proper preparation, as they had previously scouted Lynchburg. She said that the Captains were, “looking for their big hits, and staying tough on defense, and shutting down their fast attack.”
The Captains took on Frostburg on Sunday, and defeated them 4-1. Milne scored another goal during this game as CNU out-shot FSU 45-5.
Today, the Captains take on Virginia Wesleyan College at 5 p.m. in Virginia Beach, Va. With the win against Lynchburg, CNU improves their record to a season high 5-1. This is the 11th time that the two teams have met, and this win for the Captains ties the series at six a piece.
