Financial Aid Issues

This story is featured in our election coverage.

You don’t have to be in love with politics to vote. If you aren’t a political science major, you might not necessarily enjoy listening to political debates or candidates who seem to dish out empty promises. But, if you allow this to deter you from voting, you should not have the right to blame anyone else. After all, we can only blame the politicians for the lack of financial aid if we take the time to vote in the first place.

Sometimes it might seem like a lot of the issues that politicians address only face the “real world” and are of no importance to college students who are still covered by their parents insurance and haven’t had to face the gruesome task of job hunting yet. The apathetic views that elections don’t affect to you or that you’re vote doesn’t matter is just incorrect.

I’ll admit that C-SPAN is not a channel that I frequent by any means, and the idea of majoring in political science is something I could never fathom for myself, but if I used that as an excuse for not voting, that would be pathetic and hypocritical. After all, I know I’m bound to complain about an issue that spent a large amount of time under consideration in Congress.

As a recipient of financial aid, I’m going to be a part of the 60 percent of college students who graduate with debt. Financial aid, grants and the problem of rising tuition are a few things that affect all college students, whether they enjoy thinking about them or not. Obviously enough, proposals for dealing with these very issues are discussed and voted upon by Congress. This is the same Congress for which a large portion of college students will not even bother to cast their ballots. If you are an English major like myself, or any other major, and you were thinking about abstaining from voting this midterm election, think again.
