Where Are They Now: Jodie Sweetin

“How rude!” A phrase that will ring in the memories of the 1990’s hit show, “Full House,” uttered by the famous middle child Stephanie Tanner, played by Jodie Sweetin. At the age of five, Sweetin was cast into the role and stuck with the show for 192 episodes, until its end in 1995. Her charming character made her way into the hearts of millions, but as she grew up, her life off camera was not quite as charming.

Following Full House, Sweetin played one-time roles on various shows sporadically over the years. She graduated high school and attended Chapman University. At age 20, Sweetin married Los Angeles Police Officer Shaun Holguin, however they divorced four years later.

While Sweetin’s love life was unsteady, her life was even more so. In her early 20’s, she developed a drinking problem. She stated that she was never a “normal drinker,” constantly drinking herself into a state of blackout. Feeling lost and rejected by the industry she grew up in, Sweetin found herself spiraling out of control. She gave in to the temptations of drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, and quickly became addicted.

Through the encouragement of friends and family, Sweetin checked into a rehabilitation center in 2005 and was able to find the help she needed to quit her addiction. Shortly after leaving rehab, Sweetin came out to the press to publicly confess details about her addiction and recovery. Sweetin became a spokeswoman for the dangers of drinking and drug use, and told her story to other young adults in hopes she could inspire them to make the right choices.

In May of 2007, she began dating Cody Herpin, a film transportation coordinator, and later that year they married. The two were together for three years and had one child, a daughter named Zoie. Sweetin began writing a memoir of her life, titled “unsweetened,” which hit bookshelves in 2009. In it, she describes her life and struggles as a child celebrity and recovering drug addict.

Today, Sweetin is much healthier and happier. She began dating Morty Coyle in 2009, and in 2010 they had their first child together, Beatrix. This year on her 29th birthday, Coyle proposed to Sweetin. As thrilled as the couple is, there are currently no dates in place. The two are waiting for equality for gay marriage.

“We want to wait until there’s equality for everybody to get married,” the couple explained.

In December 2010, officials stated that Sweetin owes nearly $30,000 in back taxes from 2009. While her life seems to be coming together, Sweetin still has to battle her past decisions.
