Starving for art in Newport News?

Besides the occasional crafty projects assigned in class, students on campus don’t have many opportunities to expand their creativity, especially amidst all the stress of midterms. If you are looking for a way to express yourself while also getting away from campus, the Starving Artist Studio can be found a mere 5 minutes from campus at Port Warwick off of Jefferson Avenue.

The Starving Artist Studio encourages every visitor to discover their inner artist. The studio offers activities such as painting your own pottery and clay sculpting, canvas painting, and bottle painting. If you participate in a Studio Session brushes, paint, and other supplies, as well as instructions, are included for only $8.00.

If you’re looking for something sweet and original to do on Valentine’s Day, the studio is offering a ‘Sweet Day’ of free paint sessions. Unfortunately, the studio will close at 5 pm, however this leaves plenty of time to get creative with your mate. If you happen to be busy with that special someone on Valentine’s Day, don’t fret – every Friday is student day. Paint sessions are offered at $5.00 with proof of student ID.

For you crafty ladies on campus, Starving Artist offers a Ladies Night next Friday, February 18, from 7-9:30 p.m. A chocolate and dessert bar is included for only $10.00, and since it’s after hours, feel free to bring your own beer or wine along. Debbie Jardon of the Starving Artist Studio highly recommends it. “It’s a fun time to grab some girl friends and come out and spend time together,” she said, “It’s very relaxing, and it’s very fun.”

If you are interested in other special workshops and craft nights that the studio may offer, check out the calendar on their website – there is plenty to keep you busy. Starving Artist also offers fundraising opportunities for schools and organizations every first Thursday of the month. So, if you are looking for a way to get some extra cash for your organization on campus, call or email the studio and set up a date. If you set up a Paint Night the studio will donate 20% of their pottery proceeds to your organization, or you can hold a silent auction of pottery that you make at 15% off.

The staff at Starving Artist studio believe that “art is vital to the soul and is an essential and universal language for all.” They also advocate that art can heal and empower us to be aware and celebrate who and what we are. Jardon supports this claim by saying that she has seen people come to the studio “completely wired out,” and watch them paint for a few hours, leaving completely mellow, “as if they’ve just gotten a massage,” she said.

Jardon, along with other students on campus, strongly encourage stopping by and trying it out. But beware, “It’s very addicting,” said Jardon. So swing by the Starving Artist Studio Friday night for Student Day or Ladies Night, and bring home something besides an aching headache.
