Captains improve to 5-0
The Christopher Newport University Women’s Lacrosse team rolled to a 19-7 win over visiting Greensboro College Pride last Saturday. The win improved the Captain’s record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
CNU scored early, pulling ahead to a 3-0 lead when sophomore midfielder Rachel Tomlinson scored in the first 11 seconds and freshman midfielder Ashton Marshall added another two goals.
But Greensboro would respond, getting two quick goals to pull within one. Most of the remaining first half was a seesaw battle, but CNU took advantage of a Greensboro yellow card and scored three goals to pull ahead 9-6 before the end of the first half.
After a tough back-to-back first half, CNU came out of half time with intensity. Taking advantage of nearly every opportunity, CNU scored 10 goals to jump ahead 19-6. By the time Greensboro could finally respond, there were only two minutes left in the game. Leading the way for CNU was Marshall, who had five goals on seven shots. “We were expecting a tough game out of Greensboro. We wanted to come out strong,” said Marshall.
At halftime Head Coach Carolyn Raveia wasn’t too pleased with how close the score was, “Today was a good test with Greensboro, but we had unbalanced halves. We needed to work on being more balanced and aggressive and take advantage of our opportunities. We need to play both halves like how we played the second.”
“We needed to settle down and play our game,” added Marshall. Tomlinson and freshman attackman Jessica Singer also helped the team considerably. Tomlinson went on to score four goals on five shots with an assist, while Singer scored three goals on three shots. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Wilkerson recorded her fifth win in as many games and recorded a total of 10 saves. CNU plays against Virginia Wesleyan College at Captains Field Wednesday at 7 p.m. before heading to Ferrum College on Saturday, when they will play at 1 p.m. With the loss, Greensboro fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
