Goucher takes wind out of Captains’ sails
The Captains have been in overdrive, playing their fourth game in seven days this past Saturday. With Goucher College coming into town, the Men’s Lacrosse team was handed their fourth loss of the season, after a 10-2 defeat.
Coming off of two wins against Farmingdale State College and Otterbein College, the Captains had the momentum they needed for a win. But Goucher goalie Connor Mishaw foiled their plans, as he had 15 saves during the game.
Goucher opened the scoring with two goals in the first quarter. Junior attackman Kyle Boncaro scored the first goal for the visitors, less than three minutes into the game.
Sophomore midfielder Zach Fratella added the second goal for Goucher later on in the first quarter, to head into the second quarter with a 2-0 lead. Early in the next quarter, Boncaro would notch another goal.
Goucher took advantage of multiple man-up opportunities during the second quarter due to numerous CNU penalties. The Captains would have six on the game, compared to Goucher’s two. Goucher would add four more goals, before the Captains responded late in the second quarter.
CNU began to get on the board with goals by sophomore midfielder Chase Walton and senior attackman Matt Gleisner.
Those goals came with 2:11 and 1:15 minutes remaining, respectively. That would be the only offense that the Captains would see for the rest of the game.
“We were just flat out there,” said Walton. “Everyone was pretty tired from having played so much this past week.”
Goucher added two goals in the third quarter and another two in the fourth quarter to take the victory 10-2. Boncaro finished the game with three goals and two assists for the Goucher Gophers, who outshot the Captains 38-30.
“We have to be more consistent with our play,” said the Captains’ Head Coach Todd Boward. “We just played four games in seven days, but we have to work on our short term memory and move forward. That was a top 25 team. Now we know what level we need to be playing at.”
Goucher goalie Mishaw seemed to frustrate the Captains’ offense, and he was greatly supported by the Goucher defense, which forced 14 turnovers.
“He was a lefty, so it took us some time to adapt,” said Gleisner.
The loss drops the Captains’ record to 5-4 overall. They now have a 10-day break to regroup, before they hit the road to take on Virginia Wesleyan on April 6 at 7 p.m.
Boward says that the break, “gives us some much needed rest and hopefully we can beat those guys from across the water. We really want to beat them.”
