Harkey dethrones Monarchs

HEIDI NAYLOR/ THE CAPTAIN'S LOG

As the Women’s Lacrosse team went for their third straight win this past Saturday, they were lead by the leadership of senior attack Meghan Harkey, as they defeated Methodist University 20-3. The win brings the team to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in their conference, which they lead.

The game proved to be an offensive surge for the Captains, as Harkey led the team with eight shots, two goals and eight assists, as she earned a team high 10 points. She currently leads the team in points for the season with 68.

Senior midfielder Kaitlin Quigley, who leads the team in goals scored with 34, opened the scoring with a pair of goals, each assisted by Harkey.

The Captains would climb to a 14-0 halftime lead, as freshman attack Jessica Singer contributed four goals and sophomore attackmen Lauren King and Grace Valentine each added three.

Methodist came out looking to make a statement early in the second half, scoring their first two goals, but the Captains still had some offensive power left in them. Harkey would score twice and sophomore midfielder Rachel Tomlinson would add another three.

“It was important that we controlled the ball and made all the right passes,” said Harkey, who led the team in ground balls with three. The Captains out-shot the visitors 41-6 and controlled ground balls 20-5.

Singer and King each scored four times while Quigley, Tomlinson and Valentine totaled three goals apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Wilkerson, who was named a USA South Conference Defensive Player of the Week and was ranked sixth in the nation for saves, picked up her 10th win of the season. She recorded two saves and allowed three goals.

The team will play the University of Mary Washington at Captains Field April 6 at 4 p.m. UMW is currently ranked 17th in the nation.

“Being that they are ranked, we need to keep our momentum going,” said Head Coach Carolyn Raveia. “We need to focus on what we need to do in order to come away with a win.” “Mary Washington is a good team,” added Harkey. “ We need to have our best game offensively.”

After facing Mary Washington, the Captains host Shenandoah in its last USA South conference game before they start the tournament.
