Women’s Basketball coach Carolyn Hunter resigns from CNU
On Sept. 2, Head Women’s Basketball Coach Carolyn Hunter resigned from her post as leader of the Captains basketball team, and also from her position in the athletic department as Senior Women’s Administrator. Hunter piloted CNU to third place in the NCAA tournament last season, and retires with a 265-103 record for her career at Christopher Newport University, and leaves as the winningest women’s basketball coach in CNU history.
Hunter was voted USA South coach of the year twice in her time at CNU, and was also voted Virginia State College Division Coach of the Year. Over the last two seasons, Hunter’s squads have gone 60-5, while reaching the final four and the sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Athletic Director C.J. Woollum stated that the University would not disclose the reason for Hunter’s departure. “It’s just a matter of the privacy rules,” added Woollum. “That’s all I’m at liberty to say.”
The new replacement for this season is senior associate athletic director Jon Waters. Waters played for, and later assisted on the Men’s Basketball team under Woollum for over 19 years. Waters will take over after one of the best years in CNU Women’s Basketball history. Woollum spoke on the coaching situation by confirming Waters as the coach for this year, and then concluding “CNU will begin a nationwide search for a new head coach after the season is finished.”
