Newport News Police Department detectives arrested Anthony Exum, age 29, on June 19. Exum is charged with first degree murder and using a knife in the commission of a felony, said NNPD spokeswoman Holly McPherson in a news release.

In an email, NNPD Public Information Officer Lewis Thurston said Exum listed his employer as CNU after he was arrested. According to CNU’s employee directory, Exum is a prep cook in Hiden-Hussey Commons, one of two dining halls at CNU.

The crime with which Exum is charged occurredat 7:14 a.m. on Jan. 17, when NNPD received a call from a Newport News City Waterworks employee about a deceased female near Industrial Park Drive, said McPherson. The woman was identified as 24-year-old Karrie Ann Henson.

Exum’s hearing is scheduled for Aug. 25 at Newport News Circuit Court. In 2004, Exum was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and driving under restraint.
